The Chaplet of the Holy Face

The Chaplet of the Holy Face, as part of the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, was given by Our Lord Himself to Sister Mary of St. Peter, a Discalced Carmelite Nun in Tours, France, in the early 19th Century. Pope Leo XIII approved the Archconfraternity of the Holy Face in 1884. The Chaplet is a beautiful prayer honoring the five senses of Our Lord, the thirty years of His private life, and the three years of His public life. It is prayed in reparation for blasphemy, and to combat the spiritual and physical enemies of God and His Church. It may be prayed with or without the aid of the beads of a physical Holy Face chaplet, which features five groups each of one large bead and six small beads.

1. Make the Sign of the Cross on the crucifix:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

2. Say:

℣. O God, come to my assistance.

℟. O Lord, make haste to help me.

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

3. On the first large bead:

In honor of His sense of touch:

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. My Jesus, mercy.

4. On each of the six small beads:

℣. Arise, O Lord, and let Thine enemies be scattered.

℟. And let those that hate Thee fly before Thy Face.

5. On the second large bead:

In honor of His sense of hearing:

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

6. On each of the six small beads:

℟. And let those that hate Thee fly before Thy Face.

7. On the third large bead:

In honor of His sense of sight:

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. My Jesus, mercy.

8. On each of the six small beads:

℣. Arise, O Lord, and let Thine enemies be scattered.

℟. And let those that hate Thee fly before Thy Face.

9. On the fourth large bead:

In honor of His sense of smell:

℣. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

℟. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. My Jesus, mercy.

10. On each of the six small beads:

℣. Arise, O Lord, and let Thine enemies be scattered.

℟. And let those that hate Thee fly before Thy Face.

11. On the fifth large bead:

In honor of His sense of taste:

℟. And cast Thine eyes upon the Face of Thy Christ.

18. Optional Concluding Prayers:

  • Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ and all the other instruments of His Holy Passion, that Thou may put division in the camp of Thine enemies, for as Thy beloved Son has said, “a kingdom divided against itself shall fall.”
  • May the thrice-Holy Name of God overthrow all their plans!
  • May the Name of the Living God split them up by disagreements!
  • May the terrible Name of the God of Eternity stamp out all their godlessness!
  • Lord, I do not desire the death of the sinner, but I want him to be converted and to live. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

19. The “Golden Arrow” Prayer

May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most incomprehensible and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored and glorified in heaven, on earth and in the hells, by all the creatures of God and by the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. Amen.

20. Conclude with the Sign of the Cross.
