In the traditional Catholic calendar, August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary — a dedication that grew from the feast Pope Pius XII fixed on August 22, the octave day of the Assumption. O most merciful God, who for the salvation of sinners and the refuge of the wretched, has made the Immaculate Heart of Mary most like in tenderness and pity to the Heart of Jesus, grant that we, who now commemorate her most sweet and loving heart, may by her merits and intercession, ever live in the fellowship of the hearts of both Mother and Son, through the same Christ our Lord.

O Virgin Mary, most powerful Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and earth, in accordance with your wish made known at Fatima, I consecrate myself today to your Immaculate Heart. To you I entrust all that I have, all that I am. Reign over me, dearest Mother, that I may be yours in prosperity, in adversity, in joy and in sorrow, in health and in sickness, in life and in death.
Most compassionate Heart of Mary, Queen of Virgins, watch over my mind and heart and preserve me from the deluge of impurity which you lamented so sorrowfully at Fatima. I want to be pure like you. I want to atone for the many crimes committed against Jesus and you. I want to call down upon this country and the whole world the peace of God in justice and charity.
Mindful of this consecration, I now promise to strive to imitate you by the practice of the Christian virtues without regard for human respect. I resolve to receive Holy Communion on the first Saturday of every month when possible, and to offer daily five decades of the Rosary, with all my sacrifices in the spirit of penance and reparation.

The traditional Catholic calendar gives each month over to a particular mystery or devotion; August belonging to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The reason lies in the calendar itself. In 1944, Pope Pius XII extended the feast of the Immaculate Heart to the universal Church and fixed it on August 22, the octave day of the Assumption. He did so two years after consecrating the world to her Immaculate Heart in 1942, answering the request Our Lady had made at Fatima. August became, after May, the great Marian month with her Assumption on the 15th, and the feast of the Immaculate Heart crowning the octave on the 22nd.
The 1969 revision of the liturgical calendar moved the memorial to the Saturday following the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart in June, and August 22 now marks the Queenship of Mary. But the month’s older dedication has remained in traditional devotional practice, honoring the Heart of Mary in the same weeks we celebrate her being taken up, body and soul, into Heaven.
At Fatima in 1917, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children and told them that God wished to establish devotion to her Immaculate Heart in the world, and promised that in the end her Immaculate Heart would triumph. She asked for the First Saturdays devotion: confession, Holy Communion, five decades of the Rosary, and fifteen minutes keeping her company in meditation on the mysteries, on five consecutive first Saturdays, offered in reparation for profanations and blasphemies committed against her immaculate heart.
August carries its own Fatima anniversary. The children were prevented from reaching the Cova da Iria on August 13 by the local administrator, who detained them; Our Lady appeared instead on August 19 at Valinhos, and it was there she spoke of the sacrifices to be made for sinners.
A novena is simply nine days of prayer. To conclude on the traditional feast, begin on August 14, so that the ninth day falls on August 22. Name your intentions on the first day and carry them through all nine. Many make the Act of Consecration on the final day, and take up the First Saturday devotion in the month that follows.
