Saint Andrew Avellino

Confessor

Andrew was born in the Kingdom of Naples with the name Lancelotto, in the year of Our Lord 1521. He grew into a handsome young man, and feared the danger to his chastity from female admirers, so he received the tonsure and was eventually ordained priest at age twenty-six. The archbishop of Naples assigned him the task of reforming a convent that had become a source of grave scandal, and Fr. Lancelotto was so zealous in his efforts that he was once nearly killed by evil men who had made a habit of visiting the convent and were prevented by the holy priest. While recuperating in a house of the Theatines, or Congregation of Clerics Regular, the saint resolved to join that order, which he did in the year of Our Lord 1556, taking the name Andrew. He served as master of novices, and was eventually elected superior. Under his guidance the young Theatine Order grew rapidly throughout Italy. Fr. Andrew became a close friend and advisor of St. Charles Borromeo, and amongst his many duties found time to write some spiritual works. He was incapacitated by a stroke while beginning Holy Mass on this day in the year of Our Lord 1608, and died soon after. Andrew is hailed as a patron of Naples and Sicily, and invoked against a sudden death.
