Saint Joseph of Cupertino

Confessor

Joseph was born in a stable in Cupertino, in the Kingdom of Naples, to a recently widowed and evicted mother, in the year of Our Lord 1603. At the age of eight, the hot-tempered boy began to experience ecstasies and visions that often left him staring blankly at nothing, an easy target for mockery. Though confident of a vocation, he was denied several times before a Franciscan convent finally accepted him. Though a poor student, Joseph was ordained because of his great piety and spiritual gifts. During his frequent ecstasies he would often levitate, numb to everything but his superior’s voice. Because of the stir these episodes caused, Joseph endured harsh treatment from his fellow friars and superiors, and was even investigated by the Inquisition. Despite both exterior and interior struggles, he never lost his outwardly joyful demeanor, and persevered in penance and mortification until his death in the year of Our Lord 1663. The only objection raised at the beatification was to Joseph’s frequent use of tobacco, which his advocate successfully proved simply helped Joseph fast for longer and stay awake later in prayer. Joseph is a patron of aviators, air travelers, paratroopers, students, and those taking tests.

Traditional Roman Martyrology for September 18th

AT Osimo, St. Joseph of Cupertino, confessor of the Order of the Minorites Conventual, who was placed among the Saints by Clement XIII.

The same day, the birthday of St. Methodius, bishop of Olympius in Lycia, and afterwards of Tyre, most renowned for eloquence and learning. St. Jerome says that he won the martyr’s crown at Chalcis, in Greece, at the end of the last persecution.

In the diocese of Vienne, the holy martyr Ferreol, a tribune, who was arrested by order of the impious governor Crispinus, most cruelly scourged, then loaded with heavy chains, and cast into a dark dungeon. A miracle having broken his bonds, and opened the doors of the prison, he made his escape, but being taken again by his pursuers, he received the palm of martyrdom by being beheaded.

Also, the Saints Sophia and Irene, martyrs.

At Milan, St. Eustorgius, first bishop of that city, highly commended by blessed Ambrose.

At Gortyna, in Crete, St. Eumenus, bishop and confessor.

℣. And elsewhere many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.

℟. Thanks be to God.
