St. Bibiana

Saint Bibiana

Virgin & Martyr

Little is known for certain of Bibiana, other than her existence as a martyr, but most traditional accounts relate that she was the daughter of a Christian Roman noble and his wife, who were eventually betrayed to the authorities during a persecution in the fourth century. Bibiana’s father was exiled and eventually martyred, while her mother was executed just outside Rome. Bibiana and her sister Demetria were deprived of all their belongings, but otherwise spared, since a Roman official hoped to sway them away from the faith. The two sisters persevered, however, and were summoned before the official. Demetria was struck dead immediately after confessing her Christian faith, but Bibiana was forced to endure many temptations, which she withstood bravely, preserving her chastity and defying the pagan allurements. Finally, the angry official ordered that she be scourged to death, a violent fate which Bibiana endured with heroic virtue. After she died, her body was left to be devoured by wild animals, but it was soon discovered and eventually laid to rest with those of her sister and mother in a church dedicated to the virgin martyr.
