Amos was a simple herdsman and a farmer of sycamore figs, living south of Jerusalem in the southern kingdom of Judah. About seven and a half centuries before the Birth of Christ, God called upon Amos, saying “go, prophesy to my people Israel”. Amos was sent to the northern kingdom of Israel, a prosperous realm that carried out the proper religious ceremonies with great outward pomp, but weak inner devotion. The kingdom’s prosperity led to decadent and indulgent behavior by the Israelites, and even to syncretism, due to their regular business dealings and other such interactions with pagans. Amos preached strongly against the wickedness of both kingdoms, but especially that of Israel, emphasizing their decadence, their interior infidelity, and their assumption that going through the motions of religious observance would cover up unrepented sin. The prophecies included both a warning of coming chastisement and a promise of God’s restoration of the House of David. Amos was eventually tortured by the idolatrous priest Amasias, before being struck down by the priest’s son Ozias. Mortally wounded, he was carried back to his native land and buried with his ancestors. Amos is the third of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Old Testament.
