2023 Spring On-Air Appeal: Saint Monica

May 4th – The Feast of St. Monica

We are on Day Four of the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network 2023 Spring On-Air Appeal, “Lord, Hear Our Prayers”. Today, on her feast day, we are asking for the intercession of St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine.

O God, the consoler of those Who mourn and the safety of those who put their trust in You; Who mercifully accepted the holy tears of blessed Monica for the conversion of Augustine, her son; grant us, through the intercession of both, to bewail our sins and to obtain the grace of Your forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, Thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Prayers for Children

The number one prayer intention we’ve been receiving during this Spring Appeal is for family members, and especially children, to return to the faith. No saint knows this intention better than Monica, who was the mother of a wayward son named Augustine. For years she wept every night, praying for her son to convert from his pagan philosophies and adopt true faith in Jesus Christ. Her perseverance and suffering were rewarded with Augustine’s conversion and baptism at the hands of St. Ambrose, and now mother and son are praising God in heaven for eternity. Let us ask Monica’s intercession before the throne of the Almighty for the return of all prodigal children to the true Church:

Exemplary Mother of the Great Augustine: you perseveringly pursued your wayward son, not with wild threats, but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all parents in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God. Teach them how to remain close to their children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray. And grant us the grace to accept God’s Will in all things, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

Prayers for Marriages and Families

St. Monica’s sufferings came from more than Augustine’s wayward ways. Her pagan husband Patricius was temperamental, regularly unfaithful, and annoyed by Monica’s faith, adding to the pain she endured in striving to remain a faithful Christian, wife and mother. St. Monica is the patroness of prodigal children, difficult marriages victims of adultery, and the conversion of any and all relatives. Let us ask her intercession today in these heartbreaking matters, and may she and her son St. Augustine help us be witnesses of the Way, the Truth and the Life to our troubled world.
